James Wan is one of the most promising modern horror film directors and with ‘The Conjuring’ the bar is set high with a full spectrum of talent on display.
A triumphant exercise in atmospheric dread, the first hour of the film is flawless, with taut pacing and masterful scares. The biographical nature of the film adds to its credibility, rendering the tale somewhat plausible even for the most skeptical of audiences. The only sequences that shatter the illusion are when the filmmakers opt for painfully obvious digital effects. Cg bed sheets anyone?
