The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016) ★★★☆☆

1

★★★☆☆ Worth a Watch!

The film’s ingenious premise appears to be its own undoing. The first half is quite original and teases of an impressively crafted, modern horror experience. Unfortunately, genre conventions kick in as the pieces of the puzzle fall into place. Gone is the mounting dread and excitement and in its place some strictly by the numbers horror clichés and scare tactics.

Brain Cox and Emile Hirsch are convincing as a father and son duo running a family mortuary and their professional and familial dynamic sets the stage for the scares to follow. There are, however, a number of scenes where the characters behave inconsistently. They don’t appear to question nor react to some of the stranger occurrences and this tends to take you out of the experience as a sense of plausibility is lost.

Regardless, there are ample startling moments and a real sense of dread infused throughout the film that warrant a recommendation even if its fails to live up to its juicy premise.
