★★★☆☆   – Worth a Watch!

Based on the short story “Story of your life”, Twelve mysterious spacecraft appear around the world and a linguistics professor Louise Banks is tasked with interpreting the language of the alien visitors.

Runtime: 1h 56min
Genre: Science Fiction

This is probably one of 2016’s most overrated films. One can appreciate the film’s ambition in telling an original science fiction story with strong thematic elements but you can’t quite shake the feeling that you’ve seen all of this before, despite some of its more original moments.

The first half of the film is excellent. The second half, on the other hand, is infuriatingly hokey. The film’s ‘twist’ isn’t quite as unique as it likes to think, nor is it as mind-blowingly original as most critics claim. And lastly, the plot is really not that complicated. In fact, it’s downright contrived.

If you are expecting an action blockbuster alien movie, this will surely disappoint. It might even bore you to tears with its restrained pacing.  But if you’re looking for a subtle cerebral sci-fi experience, you’ll probably appreciate this.
